Carol Cushing Frizzell

After sharing over fifty-two joyous years with her husband Doug, Carol Cushing Frizzell died on July 4 at her home in Whitefield after seven months living with inoperable pancreatic cancer. This daughter of Robert and Delia Cushing was born in Keene, NH, on November 1, 1947, to celebrate her parents' first wedding anniversary! Carol was raised in North Stratford, NH, as part of a large and loving family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. A proud graduate of Stratford High School, Carol then attended Plymouth State College where she majored in English and performed as part of the Plymouth Players and the Polyphonic Choir. After graduation, Carol spent one year working at the Crotched Mountain Rehab Center working with young people who needed special help. She then taught at Groveton High School for thirty-three years as a middle high school English teacher and, after earning her Masters in Guidance and Counseling, as the guidance counselor. Carol coached girls' basketball, was advisor to the yearbook and student council, and directed many plays with her drama group. She also served as president of the teachers' association and the North Country Counselors. Carol later worked as the grant and curriculum coordinator for the supervisory union. As a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor sorority for women educators, Carol enjoyed sharing stories and learning from others who also loved the profession they had chosen. The Lancaster Fair held a very special place in Carol's heart, and she served as a director for over twenty-five years, many of them as secretary. The camaraderie she shared with fellow directors in preparing each year for the last hurrah of summer in the North Country and the hard work making the plan work created many close friendships. Much joy was felt by her as she observed smiles on the faces of fairgoers, young and old. Upon her retirement, Carol worked at Weeks Memorial Hospital as a secretary in the Oncology Department. There she had the opportunity to see first-hand the courage and faith of those fighting the disease and the compassion and knowledge of those doctors and nurses who fought so hard to give comfort to patients and their families. Carol also enjoyed thoroughly her time working as a volunteer in the gift shop. Carol spent many hours quilting, basketmaking, gambling, reading, and creating stained glass treasures. She and Doug loved camping and hiking and so enjoyed time spent "at camp" in the Lakes Region. The Weathervane Theatre was a favorite place as were Maidstone Lake and the ocean. As Carol neared the end of her life's journey, she chose quality rather than quantity in her days. She joyfully shared her positive outlook and expressed her thanks and love to the many family and friends who had added so much to her many blessings. Carol was predeceased by her Dad and Mom and her beloved friend and partner- in- crime Marna Ingerson. In addition to her adored husband Doug, she leaves behind her siblings Donna Gamble, Judy Cushing, Janet Riedinger, and Robert (Roula) Cushing; Robert (Pam) Frizzell, Terry (Bill) Rutherford, Tim (John) Leroy-Frizzell, and Lisa (Howard) Hart; godchildren Craig (Tammie) Gamble and Cara (Jason) Gaylor; nieces and nephews Tonya Riedinger, Connie (Wade) Harris and Robert A. (Heather) Cushing; Abbey (Zach) Moore, Amanda Frizzell, Paul (Kate) Frizzell, Bryanna (Nate) Young, and Dylan (Bria) Hart. At Carol's request, there will be no calling hours or formal funeral arrangements. If one chooses, donations may be made to the Groveton High School Teachers' Association Scholarship, the Oncology Department of Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, NH, or the Lancaster Fair Association.
