Norman J. Gauvin

LANCASTER - Norman J. Gauvin was born October 9, 1923 in Berlin, NH, the youngest of 12 siblings. He went to work at an early age to help with family expenses. On March 4, 1943 he joined the US Navy and served his country during World War II. He was stationed aboard two ships, the USS Little Rock and USS Boston and was a Plank Owner (first crew) on both. Returning Home he started working for Roberts Motor Sales in Lancaster and was employed there for over 30 years. Later he worked many years for White Mountain Mack until retiring in his 60's. He married his first wife Diane and together they had 5 children and enjoyed 36 years of matrimony. Upon the Diane's passing in 1983, Norman spent time keeping busy until he married June who gave him the love and companionship he was missing. They enjoyed thirty something years together at camp and their home in Lancaster. Norman enjoyed his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their visits made his life light up and they loved seeing him as well. Norman loved to hunt and fish and did so regularly on weekends and vacations. This was a passion he shared with his sons Larry and David. He was very active and had a camp at Lake Massawippi, Canada, nears Ayer's Cliff and later for many years at Maidstone Lake in Vermont. He enjoyed being at camp with his family and friends cutting and splitting firewood and fishing. He had many camp owners who counted on him for small jobs and projects that he gladly took on to keep busy. He was also well known as the Dam caretaker for many years. Other interests included pitching horse shoes and bowling. He was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and bowled on the K of C team for many years. Norman lived 93, almost 94 years, with always a positive and upbeat attitude. He took care of June as long as possible and then followed her to the nursing home to be near her in his final years. Their love for each other showed every day in their interaction. He will be greatly missed and always loved and remembered by his family and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was an inspiration to all. Surviving family members include his wife June (Marchand) Gauvin of Lancaster; four children Larry Gauvin of S. Carolina, David Gauvin of Lancaster, Kathy Hart of Groveton, Susie Reynolds of Lancaster; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Janet Hickey; his siblings and a grandson Timothy Reynolds II. A graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Calvary Cemetery in Lancaster. Reverend Matthew Mason, pastor of the Gate of Heaven Parish, will officiate.
