Warren G. Hawes

LANCASTER- Warren G. Hawes, 79, of Bunker Hill Street, died at Dana Farber/Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on August 19, 2008 after a valiant fight against a rare form of Lymphoma. He was born in Pittsburg, NH on October 6, 1928, the second son of Vernon R. and Pearl (Bacon) Hawes. Following graduation from Pittsburg High School in 1946, he graduated from The University of New Hampshire in 1950. Mr. Hawes served two years in the United States Army assigned to the European Command. His employment career included the Brown Company of Berlin, NH, Ebasco Services Company at the Moore Dam construction site in Littleton, NH and for 35 years with the Morrison Knudsen Company of Boise, ID. While with Morrison Knudsen, he was involved in several major civil and industrial construction projects in the United States and abroad. While assigned to field projects he and his family lived in several areas of the United States. He was then assigned to Morrison Knudsen Industrial Division (The HK Ferguson Co.) offices in Cleveland, Ohio. For 15 years he served a Senior Vice President of field operations. Mr. Hawes was a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society, and was active in the Northern Ohio Business Roundtable, and the national Constructors Assoc., the Construction Industrial Institute, and held a general contractors license in the State of Fl. He also became a member of the American Legion, NH Division. Mr. Hawes retired in 1990 and moved to his home in Lancaster where he resided until his death. Warren found special enjoyment being with his family and many friends from New England and Ohio, and the many rewarding golf outings with his golfing pals from Lancaster. He loved his home and the acreage around it: always finding an outdoor project to keep him busy and connected to nature. He also enjoyed listening to music from the "Swing" and Dixie Land" eras, playing the piano, gardening, working in his woodshop and documenting the family history for sharing with his family. Warren was a generous man, supporting various charities was important to him during his retirement years. He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Jodi and Peter Gray of Lancaster and Connie and Michael Smith of York, ME; two grandchildren and their spouses, Travis Gary and wife Katie (Roberts) from Lancaster, Melissa (Gray) and Jon Redding of Chambersburg, PA. He was a wonderful great-grandfather to four beautiful girls, Skylar Gray, Gracie Redding, Alissa Redding and Ashtyn Redding. He is also survived by extended family members who consider him to be the cornerstone of the family. He was predeceased by his wife Carolyn (Stewart) Hawes in 2001, his father in 1987, his mother in 1995, his brother, Russell Hawes in 1994, and a nephew Steve Hawes in 2005. At Warren's request there are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster. A celebration of his life will be held directly after the service at his home, 106 Bunker Hill Street, Lancaster. The family invites anyone who wishes to attend.
