Adele
Smith
Feb 24, 1928 — Jul 26, 2026
Adele (“Topsy”) Wieber Smith passed away peacefully on July 26th, 2026 at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, New Hampshire. She was 98. Topsy was born on February 24th, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio where her family lived at the time. She was the daughter of Carl and Adele (Knobloch) Wieber and had both an older brother William and a younger sister Jacqueline. Early in her life the family moved to Stamford, Connecticut to be closer to her mother’s family home, simply named "Grandfather’s Farm” on West Hill Road. She spent her childhood and early adult years there. She attended The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Rogers Hall School in Lowell, Massachusetts, and Pine Manor Junior College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. After college, she married Thomas M. Cuddihy in 1948 and had three children with him—Tom Cuddihy Jr, Jacquie Cuddihy (now Lincoln), and Patty Cuddihy (now Zimmerman). Her marriage lasted 10 years. In 1961, after meeting and then marrying Edward “Ted” Spalding, she and her children moved to his home town of Whitefield, New Hampshire. Along with the Spalding family, she and Ted ran the family business—Spalding Inn—on Mountain View Road for 25 years. A few years after Ted’s death in 1983, she moved to the New London, New Hampshire area where she lived an active, full life for almost 40 years until she returned to the White Mountains when she moved into the Lafayette Center for the remaining four years of her life. By then her body was frail, but her mind remained sharp and active until the very end. Topsy is survived by her three children, four grandchildren—Margaret Hocking, Michael Cuddihy, Zach Zimmerman, and Jacquie-Jane Wheeler, and seven great-grand children—Hazel, Campbell, Indy, Hadley, Eliza, Juno, and Piper).
