Allen D. Hodgdon passed on September 9, 2026, at the Concord Hospital, Concord, NH. He was a resident of the St. Vincent de Paul Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home in Berlin, NH

Born at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, NH on April 18,1952, Alan was the son of Charles O. Hodgdon and Everdene Hodgdon of Granby Vermont.

As a child Allen attended a one room schoolhouse grades 1-8 in Granby VT. His family moved to Lancaster, NH where he attended Lancaster High School.

For higher education he attended Lyndon State College for two years where he expressed great interest in architecture. Allen was encouraged to apply for a transfer to the University of Illinois as an undergraduate as he did. He went on to graduate school at Northwestern University for two years and studied with Architectural Historian Professor Graham Newell where he earned his master’s degree in architecture.

Once living back in Guildhall Vt, he worked as a grant writer for the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium in St. Johnsbury VT. He went on to be a proofreader for the Stinehour Press in Lunenburg, VT.

Allen was the owner operator of the Guildhall General Store and became involved in applying for the Guildhall Village to be named on the National Historic Registry.

He was involved in Guildhall town politics and became an Essex County Assistance Judge, an Essex County Probate Judge, an Essex County Magistrate, and a Traffic Hearing Officer all over a span of twenty years plus. He joined the National Judges Association where he became the editor of the association magazine “The Gavel”. He loved to travel to association meetings in various cities throughout the United States.

After forty years of researching the works of Architect Lambert Packard and his buildings, Allen published in 2018, “The Life, Times, and Works of Lambert Packard Architect”. The book is a remarkable accomplishment.

Allen was an excellent cook, an avid animal lover, especially his cats, rabbit, and donkey Reggie. He loved sharing and talking about music with his nephew Joseph. He believed that all people be treated fairly, with dignity and respect. Allen had a soft heart and a deep sense of humor.

Surviving family members include his sister Bonita LaValley of Derry, NH; his brothers Charles O Hodgdon Jr. of Wyoming, and Franklin Terry Hodgdon of Lancaster, NH; and niece’s nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Everdene, and a sister Donna Joy Hodgdon.

A Graveside service will be held at the Appleton Cemetery, Granby VT, on September 26, 2026, at 1:30 PM
