Amos C. Colby, 88 of Lunenburg passed away at his home surrounded by all his children on April 6, 2026. He was the son of Howard and lola Colby born at the Bobbin Mill in Lunenburg, Vermont. He attended Lunenburg schools and the Lancaster Academy. He married Mary Jane (McLaughlin) in 1959. During their 66 year loving marriage, they had four children who all live in the area, Chris & Jean Colby, Tina Colby, Brennan & Lisa Colby, Trevor & Katrin Colby. He was also "Papa" to 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He grew up in Lunenburg and spent his lifetime here. He loved farming, sugaring and forestry that he learned from his parents growing up on the family farm with his brother, Weston Colby and sister, Judith Young. He in turn raised his children in the same way exposing them to the same aspects of life he learned as a child. He began his working career at the family- owned Colby Lumber Mill. He served in the Vermont legislature for 9 years. He later served and retired as the Essex County Sheriff with over 20 years of service to the department. He gave more lectures than tickets to offenders during his time as Sheriff. He had also worked at White Mountain Mack and Timberland machines in Lancaster, New Hampshire.
He loved Lunenburg and served as a lister, fireman and selectman over the years. He enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and was a founding member of the Lunenburg Polar Bears snowmobile club. During his time in legislature, he wrote some of the original statutes organizing snowmobiling in Vermont.
At his request there will be no calling hours or service. He requests that those who cared for him go to their own church and say a prayer for him. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
