Ardeane Ruth Rines

November 27, 1928 — June 20, 2025

Ardeane “Deane” Ruth Leisy Glidden Rines passed into the arms of her Lord on Friday, June 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at her home in McIntyre Apartments, Whitefield. She was born in Wisner, Nebraska November 27, 1928, the youngest daughter of August and Elma Leisy with older sisters Kathryn, Charolette, and Margaret. August and his four daughters all lived well into their mid-90’s.

After Elma’s death in 1935, August moved the family to Florida. Ardeane attended school there and graduated in 1945 from Fern Hall. She then went to work at the Hillsboro Club resort in Pompano Beach, Florida. While working there, she met Jonas “Sim” Glidden who had traveled from Jefferson to work at the Hillsboro Club. Later, Sim had been drafted and Deane traveled alone to Jefferson to stay with the Gliddens and to work at the Waumbec until Sim was discharged from the service. They were married on October 19, 1947, at the Meadows Church.

They made their first home in a log cabin at Ingerson’s dairy and eventually moved to the Meadows Store to care for Uncle George Caron who was Postmaster and storekeeper. They eventually took over those roles. Sim and Deane were married for almost 15 years, having 5 children before Sim passed away March 1, 1962, from cancer at the age of 35. After Sim’s passing, Ardeane was appointed Postmaster of the Meadows Post Office 03587; she operated the store and served the Post Office for over 26 years.

In 1964, she married Austin Rines of Twin Mountain and became stepmother to Austin’s 5 children; the store later became known as Rines Market. Deane and Austin were married for 18 years until Austin’s death from cancer in 1982. She later married Al Saucier of Jefferson and worked alongside Al at the Israel River Campground for several years until they moved to their new home where they spent time gardening and enjoying the mountain views. Later in 2002, Deane moved to the McIntyre Apartments where she lived for 23 years.

Mother and Grammie Deane made sure all her children were raised in a loving, caring environment making lots of lasting memories, from going to camp, road trips or nighttime shopping trips to Ames in St. Johnsbury. She enjoyed hosting parties in her home including time as a Tupperware host as well as attending concerts and plays and any event her children, grandchildren and other family members were involved with. She loved collecting stamps and coins, playing bingo, watching Rick Steeves’ world travels and was an avid reader of many books and newspapers. She loved to collect dolls and Avon, and she later became known as the “giraffe lady,” collecting hundreds of giraffes. She was a 57-year member of the Granite State Rebekah Lodge, serving as both Noble Grand and District Deputy Grand Master. She was a past member of the Jefferson Methodist Church and later the Twin Mt. Baptist Church, and a longtime member of the Jefferson Historical Society.

Deane spent most of her later life doing for others. Through the Dale Carnegie class, she gained the confidence to volunteer with Caleb Interfaith Caregivers for years, driving others to doctor appointments. She also delivered Meals on Wheels to North Country residents, and she served with North Country Hospice to give respite time to families and caregivers. She was twice honored for her work: In 1989, she was awarded the Jefferson Citizen of the Year Award and in 2005, she was awarded the Joseph Vaughan Volunteer Award at the State Capital by then Governor John Lynch.

Deane is survived by her children, 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren: Jonas Glidden (Elaine); Margaret “Peggy” Silver (grandchildren Tami, Johnnie & Kathi Jo; and great grandchildren Crystal, Corey, Jacob, Travis & Joshua); James Glidden (Kathy) (grandchildren Janet & Melanie and great grandchildren Deakyn, Alexis, & Dominic); Jeffrey Glidden (Linda) (grandchildren Katrina, Kerri, Karin & Aaron and great grandchildren Gary Jr., Joshua, Brandon, Bryan & Madalynne); Elaine LaLumiere; Judith Gooden (Michael) (grandchild Jacqueline); Kevin Rines (Cindy) (grandchildren Kelly & Kyle); Joanne Sanseverino (Pat) (grandchildren Patrick, Emily & Molly; and great granddaughter Vivian); and Bill Rines (grandchildren Kaitlyn, Amanda, & Logan; and great grandchildren Kira & Julian).
