LUNENBURG – Bernice A. Martin, 92, of South Lunenburg Road, passed away Tuesday morning, January 24, 2023, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster.
Mrs. Martin was born in Columbia, NH, on November 18, 1930, the daughter of Briar and Cassandra (Legge) Hartlen.
Bernice was raised in the North Country of New Hampshire and attended Groveton High
School. While working at Evans Market in Lancaster she met her future Howard L. Martin of Lancaster. They resided for a time at Portsmouth, NH, Rochester and Hilton, NY and later Southbridge, MA. In Southbridge, Bernice was the administrative assistant for Ralph Monroe MD for many years. She was also a healthcare worker in Southbridge nursing homes.
Moving back north, they settled in Lunenburg where she enjoyed tending her flower gardens and acrylic painting.
Surviving family members include a son, Michael Martin and his wife Eva of Kissimmee, FL; four daughters, Ruth Wemple and husband Andrew of Southbridge, MA, Susan Doyle and husband Matthew of Northumberland, Terri Martin of Northumberland, Lisa Lorange and husband Paul of Southbridge, MA; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Howard, a son Howard Martin, and a daughter-in-law Keitha Martin. Bernice was the last surviving of the seventeen children of Briar and Cassandra Hartlen from Kidderville, NH.
A graveside service will be held, Saturday, May 20th, 2023, at 1:00 PM in the Riverside Cemetery, South Lunenburg. Reverend Richard Boyden, pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church, Lancaster, will officiate.
