Blenda Morey Whitney, age 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 14th at her home in Maidstone, VT after a period of failing health.
Blenda was born in Bethel, VT on August 17, 1930 to Wellington and Zilla Morey. She grew up and attended schools in Randolph, VT, graduating in 1949. She married Franklin Whitney on February 18, 1950. The couple made their home in Randolph and raised four children there.
Blenda was a stay-at-home mother and homemaker until all her children were in school. She then worked many years at Gifford Memorial Hospital as an admitting clerk, until she and Franklin moved to Saco, Maine in 1974. Blenda shared her time and talents with her new community by volunteering at the hospital, nursing homes, libraries and after school programs. Her life was dedicated to others. She was a loving caregiver for young children as well as for the elderly.
Blenda and Franklin moved to Maidstone in 2008 to be closer to family. Their home became the central hub of many gatherings, and holiday celebrations for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Blenda was an active member of the Episcopal Church in every community that she lived in and was a current member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster.
Blenda is survived by Franklin, her husband of 75 years, her four children, Franklin Jr. (Boulder, CO), Judith Conant (Maidstone, VT), Joel Whitney (Randolph, VT) and Elizabeth Robinson, and her husband Scott (Randolph, NH), as well as 11 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren who were a source of pride and joy in her life. She was predeceased by her parents, her four sisters, Hildreth, Muriel, Elsie and Elise, and her granddaughter, Eva Conant.
There are no calling hours. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the backpack program at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lancaster, or to the Vermont Food Bank.
The family extends its sincere thanks to Caledonia Home Healthcare and Hospice, as well as to the many friends and neighbors who have been so kind and helpful.
