Bruce Hutchings passed away on January 20th due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease. He was a Lancaster resident from 1998 -2016 before moving to Ossipee, NH. While in Lancaster, he served as a town selectman and volunteer with the fire department.
Bruce was born on May 2, 1951 in Winchester, Massachusetts. From a young age, he and his father would watch airplanes take off from nearby Hanscom Field in Lexington. He became a private pilot at age 23 and later earned his commercial license, instrument rating, and multi-engine rating.
His career spanned quite a range: from hardware engineer at Wang, to product developer at Parker Brothers (in a role very similar to Tom Hanks in “Big”) to engineering at MIT Lincoln Labs where he worked on space satellites, to construction and carpentry.
While he did not consider himself an “athlete” Bruce was a downhill ski instructor, a cross-country ski racer, and an avid cyclist, participating in the 192 miles Pan Mass Challenge for many years.
He and his wife Betsy consider Lancaster to be their “home town.”
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 28th in the airplane hangar at his Ossipee home.
