Carilyn Smith, 81, of Groveton, passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday April 25th 2017 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lost Nation on December 11th 1935, the daughter of Alfred J. Cross and Blanche (Whiting) Cross.
Carilyn grew up in Groveton and graduated from Groveton High School. She worked many years at the Campbell Stationary factory in North Stratford and the paper mill in Northumberland. She was later employed at Ames Department Store. She enjoyed gardening and fishing and loved the outdoors but her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren, especially her adored "Mikey". She will be most remembered by her mischievous humor and spitfire personality. Carilyn was greatly loved by all who knew her.
Surviving family members include her daughter Julie McLain of Groveton; her son Christopher Smith of North Stratford; two sisters, Marilyn Styles of Morgan, VT, Patricia Tillotson of Palm Bay, FL; one brother Alfred Cross of East Haven, VT; four grandchildren, Michael McLain of Johnson City, Tennessee, Matthew McLain of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Jessica Bowen of North Stratford, Joshua Smith of North Stratford; three great-grandchildren, Damien, Jonathan and Grayson; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Frank "Stubby" Smith and two brothers Wyman Cross and Michael Cross.
A celebration of her life will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday May 5th at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. A brief service will follow visiting hours at 7:00 PM. A graveside service will follow on Saturday May 6th at 11:00 AM at the Northumberland Cemetery in Groveton.
