Catherine Hicks

Catherine Lavasseur Hicks, of Jefferson, died on June 28th at the Country Village Center in Lancaster, New Hampshire. Catherine was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on December 17, 1938 to Marguerite Monahan Lavasseur and David Valmore Lavasseur.

Catherine attended Berlin High School and graduated in 1956. While working at the Mountain View Grand Hotel a mutual friend introduced Cathy to Clayton Thayer Hicks. Despite her moving to Hartford, Connecticut to work, their romance continued and they married on January 25, 1958.

Clayton's service in the United States Navy took him and Catherine around the country. First to Key West, Florida. Their first child, Lori Lynn was born in 1960. Cathy and Clayton moved on to New London, Connecticut where their daughter Lisa Ann and son David Thayer were born. They then moved to Charleston, South Carolina where their fourth child, Patricia Christine was born. From Charleston, the family moved to Saratoga Springs, New York, back to Jefferson following Clayton's retirement, then to Jefferson City, Missouri; Oswego, New York; Hixson, Tennessee; Omaha, Nebraska; Plymouth, Massachusetts; Plymouth, New Hampshire and finally back home to Jefferson.

Along the way Catherine worked to help support her family at various jobs including cocktail waitressing at the Officer's Club in Charleston, support staff in an elementary school, as a receptionist at Perreault and Naves Dental office in Lancaster, and opened the Jeantique on Main Street in Lancaster.

Cathy valued education and in 1988 she became a full time college student at the same time as her daughter Patty. Catherine graduated from the State University of New York at Oswego with a degree in Education. Catherine taught high school English for a time after graduation. Catherine worked for the Parent Information Center and gave informational parenting workshops in northern Hampshire.

Cathy appreciated the finer things in life, whether it was interior decorating or travel and entertaining; and she enjoyed them even more with friends and family.

Catherine was predeceased by both of her parents, her sister Virginia Raumakaitis, her brothers Roger and Robert Lavasseur, and recently her son David Hicks. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Clayton, her daughter Lori Lynn Hicks Carlson and her husband Jesse, of Thornton, Colorado; her daughter Lisa Ann Hicks of Jefferson; and her daughter Patricia Hicks O'Neill and her husband Daniel of Holderness, New Hampshire. She loved her grandchildren Catherine Webster, Candra Hicks, McCullan Hicks, Dylan Carlson, Elizabeth Dimick, and Samuel Dimick; and her great-grandchildren Korben and Karsen Webster, Deacon Kennison, Henry, Mia and Madelyn Hicks; and many nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-laws.

A graveside service will take place at the Hillside Cemetery in Jefferson at 12:00 PM on July 12th followed by a celebration of Cathy's life at the Belleview Barn in Jefferson.
