WHITEFIELD - Clara M. Gregory, 85, of Hazen Road, died Wednesday afternoon, June 6, 2018, at Weeks Medical Center after a period of failing health.
Clara, also known as "Blossom", was born in Guildhall on December 31, 1932, the daughter of Wilbur W. Ball Sr. and Dorothy L. (Woodward) Ball. She was raised in Lancaster, graduating from Lancaster Academy and went on to cosmetology school where she learned her life profession.
She married her first husband Ralph "Whitey" Hersom and they moved to Northumberland where she was the proprietor of Blossoms Beauty Shop for 47 years. In 1979 she lost Whitey to sudden death and she later married her second husband Oscar Melfaent who also predeceased her. In the late eighties she married Reverend John C. "Jack" Gregory. They moved to Whitefield and she continued working as a cosmetologist until 2016.
Clara had a strong love of the Episcopal church and was a longtime member of St. Paul's Church in Lancaster and St. Marks Church in Groveton. She was also a wonderful caregiver to her nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving family members include her children Rebecca E. Bernard and husband Jack of Groveton, Kathi A. Mitchell and husband Kenneth of Texas, Nathan A. Hersom and wife Christine of Sanbornton, Jennifer L. Chauvette of Groveton; two step-sons, John M. Gregory-Davis and wife Susan of Meriden, James A. Gregory and wife Eileen of East Burke; a brother Harlie E. Ball of Franklin; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In 2103 she was predeceased by Jack and a son Craig E. Hersom. She also lost a brother Wilbur W. Ball Jr. in 2015.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 29th at 10:30 AM at St. Paul's Church in Lancaster. Reverend Timothy Brooks, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Northumberland Cemetery.
