DALTON - Clare H. Packard, 88, died Saturday afternoon, September 20, 2008, at his home on Faraway Road.
Mr. Packard was born in Marlborough, NH, on January 2, 1920, the son of Eleazer and Dora (Derby) Packard.
He was raised in Marlborough and worked there at a chair factory until he served with the US Air Force during WWII. Clare served from 1942 to 1946 in China, Burma, and India. After his honorary discharge from the military he came to the North Country to work for a building contractor and eventually started his own business known as Clare Packard General Contractor.
He was a 65-year lifetime member of the Whitefield American Legion Post 41 and he served 15 years with the Whitefield Volunteer Fire Department.
Family members include his wife Marion (Provencher) Packard of Dalton; two sons, Charles J. Packard of Dalton, Peter G. Packard of Whitefield; two daughters, Loretta Grace of Concord, NH, Katharine Blodgett of Worchester, MA; a brother Merwyn Packard of Marlborough, NH; a sister Barbara Phillips of Mendon, MA; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday evening September 25, from 6-9 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 11:00 at St. Matthew's Church in Whitefield. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Whitefield.
