Clarence 'Bum' I. Smith
December 23, 1929 — March 12, 2016
GILMAN - Clarence I. "Bum" Smith, 86, of Cedar Street, died peacefully at his home Saturday morning March 12, 2016. He was surrounded by his family.
Mr. Smith was born in Concord, VT on December 23, 1929 the son of Bernie and Dorothy (Joslin) Smith.
Bum Smith moved to Gilman in 1944 and graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School in 1950. During the Korean War he served with in US Army in Germany with the Army of Occupation. He was an employee of the Gilman Mill for 40 years working for Gilman Paper, Georgia Pacific and Simpson Paper Company. He retired in 1990.
His memberships included the American Legion Post #41 in Gilman and the Moose River Masonic Lodge #82 in Concord.
Bum enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, hunting, playing cribbage and making maple syrup. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family. In his younger years he impassioned his children with his love of skiing.
He was a beloved husband and father survived by his wife Evelyn (Thayer) Smith of Gilman; a son Dennis W. Smith of Burlington; two daughters Joyce M. Presby of Bethlehem, Nancy L. O'Brien of Quechee, VT; a brother Norman "Bud" Smith of Lunenburg; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother Gordon Smith and sister Thelma Stevens.
At Mr. Smith's request there are no visiting hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, S. Lunenburg. There will be an announcement at a later date.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his memory to the Gilman Senior Center, 67 Riverside Avenue, Gilman, VT 05906.
