LANCASTER- Captain Darron (Dar) G. Spalty, 61, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 11, 2008 after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. His beloved wife, Janice and family were at his side.
Dar was born in Rochester, NY on Novemebr 6, 1946, the son of Jean (Howland) Martin and Irving G. Spalty.
He was a member of the Rochester Chapter of the Order of DeMolay. Dar joined the Army and attended flight school and he served his country proudly in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot in the Stage Coach 155
th
Assault Helicopter Company.
After leaving the service, Dar worked commercially as a helicopter Captain all over the world, eventually traveling on every continent except Antarctica. His wit, charm, generosity and love of life created lifelong friendships with people all over the globe.
Dar eventually settled in Lancaster, to be near his sister, Maren and her husband Gary Halladay of North Stratford. As an animal lover, he decided to invest in alpacas for his future retirement. In a short time, he and Janice were raising nationally recognized champions at new Millennium Alpaca Farm. He always appreciated the support and interest of the town of Lancaster and its residents as the alpaca farm grew.
He continued to work as a pilot and proudly reached his career goal of 20,000 flying hours, pilot error-free, in June of 2006. His many interests ranged from woodworking to anything mechanical including auto restoration. His first love was spending time with his family and friends.
Family members include his loving wife, Janice (Chabot) Spalty, his mother Jean (Howland) Martin and her husband Raymond of Weeki Wachee, FL, his father, Irving G. Spalty of Rochester, NY, his sister Maren Halladay and her husband Gary of N. Stratford, his son Steven Spalty of Steamboat Springs, CO, his daughter Nicole Frederick of Wilkes-Barre, PA, a stepson Caleb Thompson and his wife Julie of Lovell, ME and stepdaughter Hannah Thompson of Jefferson, NH and five grandchildren.
Friends are invited to join his family in a celebration of his life at his home on Thursday, October 16

between the hours of 2 and 8 PM.
