DALTON- Dean A. Sweeney, 74, of French Road, died at his home on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, with his family by his side.
Mr. Sweeney was born in West Stewartstown on August 15, 1934, a son of Edwin and Cora (Colby) Sweeney.
Dean grew up in Whitefield and moved to Dalton in 1968. He owned and operated his Auto Body shop for over 40 years. He was involved in all aspects of the town, including a volunteer member of the Dalton Fire Dept and served 18 years as a selectman. He truly loved his town.
He was an avid hunter; he enjoyed leatherwork, masonry, traveling and especially playing mini golf with the kids.
Family members include his wife of 52 years, Sharon (Gilman) Sweeney, three sons, Kevin Sweeney of Dalton, Brian Sweeney of Whitefield and Mitchell Sweeney of Dalton, two daughters, Melonie Thompson of Lancaster and Debbie Gilmore of Littleton. Four sisters, Mattie Burns and Eleanor Hill both of Whitefield, Katherine Sheridan of Littleton and Edwina Patten of Littleton, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, close friends Dick, Steve, Rodney, Sonny and Bert and several nieces and nephews. A daughter Jodiene Sweeney, three brothers Julius Sweeney, Edward Sweeney and Robert Sweeney and a sister Florence Ricker, predeceased him.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday evening, January 23, from 5-8 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 AM at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ. Reverend Virginia Alvarez, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
