Donald E. Barton, 88, of Whitefield went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus on Tuesday, 28 July 2020. He died at DHMC from complications of his emphysema following a car accident.
Don was born in Library, PA on 20 August 1931 to William and May (Dalton) Barton. On 28 October 1961 he married Jane M. Shidel.
Don served 2 years in the U.S. army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Trieste, Italy. Following his discharge, he worked as a draftsman for G.E. but had to change jobs because of his eyesight. He then worked for International Nickel as a metallurgical technician specializing in failure analysis of nickel alloys.
Upon retirement from INCO, Don worked for several years at a local market before finding his perfect part-time job as a greeter at Wal-Mart. There he was paid to talk to people and give candy to children. Don loved people, especially children. He was always sharing his faith if only through a message on his hat or t-shirt. He enjoyed singing and humming (even though it was off-key), particularly hymns from his youth.
Through his several moves, Don remained a loyal fan of his Pittsburgh sports teams, especially the Steelers. He loved to cheer them on and root against the Ravens.
Surviving family members include 3 daughters, Lori (Josephine) & Julia Barton of Whitefield and Beth Barton of Pittsfield, MA; as well as 2 grandchildren, Jerod and Shaiane Barton. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane and his brother Walter Barton and sisters Esther Barton, Lorraine Barton Evans, and Wilda Barton Ferguson.
A funeral service will be held graveside at Park Street Cemetery, Whitefield at 11am on Tuesday 11 August, Reverend Nathaniel Bickford officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's name to the Whitefield Christian Church or to Samaritan's Purse.
