PENACOOK - Donald M. Mann died peacefully at the Concord Hospice House on Saturday August 13, 2016.
Don was born in Pittsfield, MA, the wonderful son of Clifford and Mertie Mann and the brother of Mae Irene. He was a happy little boy and a very playful child as we are sure his sister knew!! They moved from Pittsfield to Greenfield, MA where Don spent his youth.
Don graduated from Greenfield High and immediately enlisted in the Air Force. He proudly served for 4 years being station in Morocco, and traveling to England, France, Germany and Spain.
In 1962 he found Rachel Merrow Hastings, formerly of Lancaster, the real love of his life, and for the next 55 years they were a true couple that worked, traveled and created three beautiful homes together and on May 4, 2016 they became husband and wife.
In 1965 he started his own business which was D.M. Moore Co. Inc. and he proudly bid and won contracts with the Portsmouth Navy Yard. This continued until 1992 when triple herniated disc surgery forced him into early retirement. This meant he and Rachel would spend the next 22 winters at their home in Melbourne, FL. They also made many trips north to visit Rachel's family in Lancaster and for many years attended and camped out at the Lancaster Fair.
In 2007 he had open heart surgery in Melbourne, recovering from this and 2 years later had a total knee replacement and again came through this with flying colors. However in 2011 Rachel realized he had something he probably would not be recovering from. He was able to stay in his home until July 2015. After a month's stay in the hospital he went to Granite Ledges in Concord where he remained until July 20, 2016 when his condition worsened and he had to return to the hospital.
Don was a very happy, healthy, strong, determined man but all of this could not compete with Alzheimers Disease.
He was a lifetime member of the Elks.
He leaves his wife Rachel of Penacook, his niece Gail Simons and her husband Bill and their family of Edina, Minnesota; his nephew Dr. Bruce Rowe and his wife Joy and family of Richmond, VA; his sister-in-law Patricia Marshall and her husband Wayne of Umatilla, FL, formerly of Lancaster, their son James and family of Waterville, VT and their son John and his family of Flowery Branch, GA. He also leaves 2 great-nieces, 2 great-nephews, 1 great-great-niece and 1 great-great-nephew. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Mae Irene, aunts & uncles.
