Donald James Moffett, 91, most recently of Concord, died on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, following a period of declining health.
Born October 3, 1926, in Groveton, N.H., to Irving and Josephine Hayes Moffett, Don grew up in that North Country town where he was a star athlete at Groveton High School-Class of 1944. Following graduation he joined the United States Navy, with whom he served for the duration of World War II.
In 1946 Don enrolled at New Hampton Prep School, where he continued his athletic exploits, leading his school to the New England Prep School Basketball Tournament at the Boston Garden. As a baseball player, he drew the attention of the Philadelphia Phillies.
When his own father passed away in 1947, Don returned to Groveton to help support his family. He worked for over 12 years for Metropolitan Insurance Company before becoming a production scheduler for the Groveton Paper Mill. He retired from the mill in 1988.
In 2001 Don and his wife moved to Concord N.H. to be closer to family members.
Don is survived by his spouse of over 64 years, Marguerite "Sis" Moffett, along with two sons, Michael Moffett of Loudon and James Moffett of Concord, as well as a daughter, Marilyn, who resides in Wisconsin. He was predeceased by a son, John Moffett, who passed away in 2007. Don and Sis have five grandchildren- Katie, Kendra, Kristian, Caleb and Malia-and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was also pre-deceased by three older sisters, Madelyn Moffett LaRoche, Evelyn Moffett Wagner, and Beverly Moffett.
A long-time member of Groveton's American Legion Post #17, Don was also a golf member of Jefferson's Waumbec Country Club. In his later years he became an inveterate follower of the Boston Red Sox on television, although the last game he went to at Fenway Park was the 1948 playoff between the Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians.
Funeral calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, at Lancaster's Bailey Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 30, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Lancaster-where Don and Sis were married in 1954.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Catholic Charities.
