Dorothy E. (Kehrer) Birt, 88, of River Road, Lunenburg, Vermont, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday morning, February 2, 2009 at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster.
She was born in Akron, Ohio, on February 21, 1920, the daughter of Percy Herman and Maud (Hostettler) Kehrer.
Dorothy attended Akron University in Ohio before going to work as a Secretary for the Department of War in Washington, D.C. There, she met and fell in love with her husband on New Year's Eve. After marriage, she devoted full-time to raising her family involving herself in Girl Scouts of America, community service activities and teaching Sunday school. Later in life, she partnered with her husband, George, in running Towne Liquors in Connecticut and was a charter member of the Darien Dinner Theater in Darien, Connecticut. She was an avid golfer in her early years and a bridge enthusiast throughout her life.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Diane Lis and husband Frank of Southbury, Connecticut; two sons, George Birt, Jr. of Dayton, Ohio, and Richard Birt and wife Christine of Lunenburg, Vermont; and three grandchildren, Julie Krueger and husband Roy of Newtown, Connecticut; and David and Justin Birt of Lunenburg, Vermont. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, George B. Birt in 2006 and her granddaughter Lisa Ann Lis.
There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
