WHITEFIELD - Dorothy Avis Tate, 93, of Spring Street, died Saturday, June 18, 2022 after a period of failing health. She was receiving Hospice care at her son's home in East Haven, Connecticut.

Dorothy was born in Gilman, Vermont, on April 23, 1929, the daughter of John Angus and Vera May (Cox) Rolfe. Growing up in Stark, NH, her family later moved to Groveton where she graduated from Groveton High School. She also resided for many years in Connecticut and worked 25 years as a shipping clerk for Henry G. Thompson in New Haven. Returning to the North Country she was employed as a caregiver for the late Randall E. Spalding, a distinguished hotelier.

In her free time, she enjoyed kayaking, watching movies and being around children. She especially loved spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren and her dogs Tucker and Paris.

Dorothy was a member of the Eastern Star, and the Lancaster VFW and Whitefield American Legion Auxiliaries.

Surviving family members include her two sons David Phelps and Donald Phelps; grandsons, Michael Phelps and Shawn Phelps; great-grandchildren Samantha Ruggiero and Nicole Phelps; and a great-great granddaughter Layla Rose Torres. She was predeceased by her husband Irving Tate and two grandchildren Donald Phelps Jr. and Michelle Phelps.

At Dorothy's request, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to Riverside Animal Rescue, Gilman, VT.

A graveside will be held Sunday morning, July 17, 2022, at 11:00 AM in the Northumberland Cemetery. Celebrant Deborah Szauter will officiate.
