LANCASTER - Douglas L. Smith, 67, of McGary Hill Road, died at his home Thursday, December 23, 2021 after a recent illness.
Douglas was born in Providence, Rhode Island, during the infamous Hurricane Carol, on August 31, 1954 the son of Thomas Francis and Helen Jackman (Shippee) Smith.

Raised in Foster, Rhode Island, he attended local schools, including Ponaganset High School, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Plattsburg Air Force Base where he worked on the tarmac guiding and refueling planes. In 1985 he earned his CDL and started a career as a semi-truck driver. He drove for JP Noonan, Wausau Paper, Carl Johnson and MBI.

Doug enjoyed spending time at camp, shooting pool, and sports; he was an avid fan of the New England Patriots. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast, and his greatest enjoyment was working on and riding his motorcycles.

Surviving family members include his son, Thomas Smith of Cammillus, NH; long-time companion Melanie Whitney of Lancaster; two brothers, Roger Thomas Smith of Sterling, CT, Bradford Allen Smith of Foster, RI; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Cheryl A. Hawkins Smith in 2001.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, January 22, from 1:00 - 3:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. Words of remembrance will be shared at 2:30 PM. A summer gathering will be held at the family camp on Marshall Road. A notice will be posted prior.
