LANCASTER - Edward C. Smith Sr. 90, of Lancaster, NH died Thursday December

4, 2014 at Country Village Genesis Eldercare

Center.

Edward

was

born in

Lancaster,

NH

on

January

4,

1924,

the

son

of

Gordon

and

Lillian

(Newton)

Smith.

He

was

raised

in

Lancaster

and

attended

the

Lancaster

Academy.

On April 3, 1948 Edward married Joyce M. Thomas (Newman) and on April 30 1948

he enlisted

in

the

U.S.

Navy.

He

was

a boiler

technician

on

the

ships

he

served.

He

was

a

veteran

of

both

WWII

and

the

Korean

Conflict

and

served

on

the

USS

Niblack

and

the

USS Macon before his

final

and honorable discharge

in

1952

from the Navy.

After the Navy he moved to St. Johnsbury and worked for Fairbanks

&

Morse

Scale

Company. Eventually he moved back to Lancaster and became part of the spare crew

of

the

Boston

&

Maine

Railroad.

Then

moving

on

to

Gilman

Paper

Mill

in

Gilman

Vermont.

After recovering from an

injury

to his arm

in a

paper machine accident, Edward

owned and operated Smith's Mobile Station

in

Lancaster for 10

years.

During

his

retirement,

Edward

enjoyed

collecting

coins,

watching

westerns,

his

flower

gardens,

talking

about

the Navy

with

other

servicemen

and

especially

any

time

he

spent

with

his

grandchildren

and

great

grandchildren.

He

was

also

a

lifetime

member

of

the

John

W.

Weeks

post

3041

of

Lancaster

and

the

Military

Order

of

the

Cooties

serving

as

a

past

Grand Commander  and

Quartermaster.

Surviving

family

members include his wife of 66 years, Joyce M. (Thomas) Smith; a

son, Edward C. Smith Jr. of Lancaster;   two daughters, Verna M. White of Lancaster and

Jodi

A. Rooney and husband John of Lancaster; a brother, Walter Smith of Newburyport,

MA. Seven

grandchildren

and

2

step

grandchildren;

10

great-grandchildren

and

4

step

great­

grandchildren; many nieces and

nephews

.

A graveside service will be held in the Spring at Calvary Cemetery in Lancaster and will be announced at a later date.

In
