LANCASTER - Edward J. Widmayer, 87, died at his home Thursday morning, September 9, 2010.
Mr. Widmayer was born in New York City, NY, on July 22, 1923, the son of Fred J. and Rose (Kronert) Widmayer.
Edward was a long time resident of New York City where he worked as an illustrator but his life's work and passion was oil painting. He was a fine artist who mastered several styles from realism to modern. His abstract art, dubbed modern realism, depicts recognizable images in blocks of bold colors and shapes. He attended the Pratt Institute in NYC, studying with the legendary Hans Hoffman. In Paris he worked with Fernand Léger and Amdee Ozenfant. He was selected for a national exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
During World War II he served with the US Army in the European Theater.
His wife, Maria T. (Robas) Widmayer predeceased him in 2006.
Visiting hours will be held Saturday morning, September 11, from 9:00 to 10:45 AM. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 AM in Summer Street Cemetery. Reverend Thomas Jackson, pastor of the Lancaster Church of Christ will officiate.
