LANCASTER- Eleanor D. Kimball, 87, died Tuesday afternoon, June 30, 2009, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon.

Mrs. Kimball was born in New York, NY on May 2, 1922 the daughter of Henry W. Lyding M.D and Julia (Brandsema) Lyding.

Eleanor grew up in New York City in a family of four, with her brother Charles, her mother Julia who was a nurse and her father Henry, who was an eye, ear and throat surgeon at the New York Ophthalmic Hospital.

She attended Adelphi College and graduated from Syracuse University in 1946. During World War II she and her husband Richard traveled to many cities while he was in the Coast Guard, and in the years after when he was employed in several cities. Her husband was an attorney in Lancaster for many years, and she served as his assistant in their law office. She and her husband were very interested in animals and supported their causes.

She was a member of the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ.

Family members include her husband of 67 years Richard C. Kimball of Lancaster, her daughters, Susan E. Rice and her husband Robert E. Rice Jr. of Rowley, MA, and Melanie A. Watson and her husband Steven J. Watson of Burlington, VT and her grandchildren, Julia C. Watson and Benjamin C. Watson. Her brother Charles W. Lyding predeceased her.

A funeral service will be held on Monday morning, July 6, at 11:00 AM, at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ. Reverend Virginia Alvarez, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Wheeler Hill Cemetery in North Littleton. Following the burial a collation will be held in the Library at the Mountain View Grand Hotel in Whitefield.
