Guildhall-EVERDENE ANN HODGDON, 84, of Guildhall Village, Guildhall, Vermont, died on Christmas morning, December 25, 2012, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She had been a resident of Guildhall since 1988.
Everdene was born on July 19, 1928, in Canaan, Vermont, a daughter of George and Hattie (Ellingwood) Brown. On April 2, 1948, in Upton, Maine, Everdene married Charles O. Hodgdon, a woodsman from Granby. Five children were born to Charles and Everdene. The family moved to Lancaster from Granby in 1961. Everdene was a stay-at-home mom until her children left home, and after Charles died in 1988 she was
hired as a cook at the Guildhall Elementary School, where she worked for 20 years. The school children referred to her as "Aunt Everdene." They loved her and she loved them. So good at what she did -- the school directors gave her the title of chef. The school children were often heard to say at home: "That's not the way Everdene does it!" Everdene was an avid reader and crossword puzzle addict. She was a kind-hearted and generous person, but stern when circumstances required it.
Mrs. Hodgdon is predeceased by her husband, Charles, and one granddaughter, Heather. She is survived by: one brother, Linwood; her five children: Bonnie, Sonny, Allen, Donna and Terry; and by five grandchildren: Danielle, Shanna, Michael, Max and Jonathan; and six great-grandchildren: Jackson, Bretton, Andrew, Deakon, Joseph and Kayleigh.
Visiting hours will be from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, at Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held in Granby in the spring.
