GUILDHALL - Fred D. Shannon, 77, of North Road died suddenly at his home Monday afternoon March 3, 2014.

Mr. Shannon was born in Sussex, New Brunswick on May 2, 1936 the son of Ralph Freeze and Ida Helen (Barlow) Shannon.

At 10 years old he moved stateside with his family to Groveton.  Fred was raised in Groveton and Stark and was a 1954 graduate of Groveton High School.  He served in the National Guard and later the US Navy where he was a radioman on the SSK Cavalla 244.  For 44 years he was employed at the Groveton Paper Mill. He worked in various jobs there over the years and retired in the maintenance department.

Fred had many things in life he enjoyed.  He loved to hunt and fish, look for critters with his friend John and most of all spend time with his grandchildren.  He was an accomplished musician and played several instruments but was best known for his guitar, especially playing bluegrass with his friend Vic.

He was a member and past master of the Benton Lodge #88 F.&A.M. and also served as past District Deputy Grand Master District #12.

Family members include his wife of 56 years Sandra Lee (Goad) Shannon of Guildhall; six children, Kathy Shannon of Groveton, Karie Bresnahan of Northumberland, Bradley Shannon of Guildhall, Lynn Bourgault of Ossippee, Brian Shannon of Guildhall, Brenden Shannon of Guildhall; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a brother Joe Shannon of Stark; three sisters, Mary Shannon of Lancaster, Helen Shannon of Delaware, Jean Fairweather of South Carolina and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased last March by a grandson Zach Shannon.  He was also predeceased by

two brothers, Edwin Shannon Sr. of Stark and Otis Shannon of Groveton.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday afternoon and evening March 6, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster.  A Masonic service will be held 6:45 PM at the funeral home.  The funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Guildhall Community Church.  Rev. Gerry Piper, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Springfield, VT will officiate.  A committal service with military honors will be held in the spring in Northumberland Cemetery.
