TWIN MOUNTAIN, NH - GEORGE ERNEST TEMPLE III, also known as G. Ernest Temple 3rd and Ernie Temple, age 87, resident of Carroll, NH entered into eternal rest on Saturday at Country Village Center, Lancaster, NH in the early morning hours of December 8, 2018 while in rehabilitation and recovery from hospitalization which began October 12th. He had been receiving treatment for heart and vascular challenges at Catholic Medical Center and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
Ernie was born on August 29, 1931 in Woburn, Massachusetts, the oldest son of George E. Temple Jr. and Olive Viola (Bennett) Temple. He grew up in the Temple Family "Home Sweet Home" (circa 1819) in Carroll, NH with his brother Norman (died March 1989). Ernie graduated from primary school in Twin Mountain and the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He received an Air Force commission and served as a 1st Lieutenant at Loring Air Force Base, Maine during the Korean War. After his 3 years of USAF service, Ernie worked as an engineer for General Electric Company in Philadelphia, PA with projects in White Sands, New Mexico. Ernie married Joan Ann Daugert of Upper Darby, PA in 1961 and moved to Avon, Connecticut where he raised his family working as an aerospace engineer for Hamilton Standard, now United Technologies Corporation. His early career is highlighted by participating in the U.S. Space Program in development of life support system space suits and backpacks for NASA astronauts going to and landing on the Moon. He devoted much of his primary career to engineering solutions for life-supporting space and sea systems to facilitate exploration. Ernie chose to live an independent life and moved to Maryland to work for Fairchild Industries over a multi-year period and then returned to United Technologies in Connecticut where he completed his career in aerospace in the early 1990s. He moved back to his hometown of Carroll, NH and started a new career by joining Intertek Group to provide compliance and certification for the ETL Label earned for quality and safety in many businesses throughout MA, VT, NH and ME. After over twenty years of traveling to businesses throughout northern New England and as far south as Virginia, Ernie retired from his second career in 2015 at age 83. He maintained involvement with organizations as a consultant to stay engaged with his many business contacts as he believed health to be a function of participation.
He was an avid reader on a wide variety of topics especially related to health and the preservation of freedom and liberty. His hobbies included many building construction and remodeling projects for his family and friends, maintaining a forestry plan for the family lands with John Deere equipment, and support of many organizations including the National Arbor Day Foundation, Historic Preservation Society, National Rifle Association, many military service organizations, and the advancement of conservative principles and principled leadership. Ernie believed strongly in civic engagement and most recently served on the Town of Carroll Planning Board. He was involved with Lion's Club International in multiple locations, also served as President, and participated in many efforts in growing small business. He was committed to quality education and elected to the Board of Education in Avon, CT where he served as Chairman for a period of time. Ernie's unique technical approach using his knowledge and precision in problem solving and execution is the inspiration for the family's endearing terms "Ern-gineering" and "Ern-genuity". He loved gazing at the stars, pondering the origins of the universe, and watching the aurora borealis in the late days of summer before his birthday each year.
He is survived by his three loving children and their families: His son, an architect in South Carolina, George Ernest Temple IV (Temp) with daughter-in-law Monica Brown-Temple, grandson George Ethan Temple and granddaughter Sophia Nicole Brown; his daughter, a veterinarian in Arizona, Tara-Lyn A.
