Gary P. Downing Sr.

LUNENBURG - Gary P. Downing, 70, of South Lunenburg Road, died suddenly at his home Friday morning, October 12, 2018, after a period of failing health.
Born in Lancaster on May 25th, 1948 he was the son of the late Frank Downing and Jean Willson Downing. He graduated from Lancaster High in 1966. In 1974, he started logging with his father Frank and brother Malcolm. After his father passed away, Gary carried on the logging business with his business partner/brother Malcolm, his son Mark and his grandson Trevor. Gary will be remembered by many for delivering firewood to locals with his longtime friend Dan Comeau and as a talented carpenter; building many local homes with his father Frank.
In his spare time, Gary loved to hunt, go fishing with his brother Malcolm, and go shooting on Sundays with his son Gary Jr. Every November, he enjoyed spending a week at hunting camp with his two sons and four grandsons swapping hunting stories, while they all hoped to bag "the big one." Gary also had a passion for antique cars.
Surviving family members include his two sons; Gary P. Downing, Jr. of Lancaster and his girlfriend Kelly Berish, Mark H. Downing and his wife Christy of Lancaster; four grandsons, Trevor Downing and his fiancé Evangeline Gauvin of Lunenburg, VT, Craig Houston, Ethan Downing, and Preston Downing of Lancaster; three great-grandsons, Sullivan Day-Houston of Lancaster, Sawyer Downing and Hudson Downing of Lunenburg, VT, one brother, Malcolm Downing and his wife Maren of Lunenburg, VT, and one step-brother, Rick Ball Sr. and his wife Brenda of Passumpsic, VT; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Bea Lewis of Lancaster, NH.
Memorial visiting hours will be held Friday evening, October 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster.
