LUNENBURG- George B. Birt, 87, of River Road, died Sunday evening July 23, 2006, after complications from a stroke, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Birt was born in London, Ohio, on June 2, 1919, the son of George W. and Valerie (Shaffer) Birt.
George was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, earning a Bachelors Degree in business, while in college he was a Proctor of the freshman dorm and was active in sports. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corp.
He was employed by Firestone in New Castle, PA where he worked as a sales manager, Johnson & Johnson as a Lumite Division Manager, and for Columbus Mills Carpet, as a National Sales Manager. For thirteen years he was the owner of the Wine Shop in Darien, CT., and the President of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member of the Rotary. When he retired he moved to Lunenburg, where he co-owned a farm with his son Richard and daughter in-law Christine. He also continued a membership in Rotary, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, and was a marketing mentor for P.J Noyes.
Family members include his wife of 63 years, Dorothy (Kehrer) Birt of Lunenburg, a daughter Diane Lis of Southbury, CT; two sons, George Birt Jr. of Dayton, OH, and Richard Birt of Lunenburg, three grandchildren.
There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held Thursday morning July 27 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lancaster. Reverend John Jackson, will officiate. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall.
