George Ellery Merrill

August 2, 1928 — September 18, 2010

George Ellery Merrill, age 82, a lifelong resident of Lunenburg, Vt., passed away peacefully on Saturday evening at DHMC in Lebanon, NH, after a long and courageous battle with Scleroderma.

George was born on August 2, 1928 in Lunenburg, Vt., to Fred Merrill and Ruth (Miles) Merrill. He married Gwendolyn (Watts) Merrill on August 19, 1951, and enjoyed 59 years of togetherness, he was very proud and spoke often about how lucky he was to be married to Gwen.

George attended local schools, including the one room Pierce District schoolhouse in Lunenburg.  He served in the US army and was a Veteran of the Korean War. George worked for the Gilman Paper Company, was a self-employed general contractor and eventually retired from Winterset Construction.  His biggest thrill in life was hunting and being outdoors.  George enjoyed telling stories to anyone who would listen about his many hunting adventures and there were many !  We will miss hearing them.  He had a great sense of humor and a kind heart.

Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn of Lunenburg, Vt., two sons, Dennis and his wife Betsy of Waterford, Vt., Steve and his wife Denene of Lyndonville, Vt., one daughter Cindy and her husband Roger of Plainfield, NH, four grandchildren, Rachel, Stephanie, Kevin and John.

He was predeceased by, his mother and father, and his sister Marion Carter.

George's family would like to thank Wayne Newton for all his help, we don't know what we would have done without you.

There will be no service or calling hours.
