DALTON - Gerald W. Holmes, 74, of Whitefield Road, died Wednesday afternoon, January 11, 2017, at Littleton Regional Hospital after a long illness. He was surrounded by his family.

Mr. Holmes was born in Berlin, NH, on January 4, 1943 the son of John W. and Florence (Reid) Holmes. On July 16, 1977 he married Nancy Ellen Bailey.

Gerald was a longtime resident of Dalton and worked many years for the Dalton Highway Department. His primary occupation was truck driver and was employed for a time with Ingerson Trucking in Lunenburg and Currier Trucking in Gorham. He also held other jobs including wood cutter, farmer, sawyer, and shoe shop laborer.

He served on the Dalton Fire Department from 1979-81. Gerald enjoyed fishing, truck driving, hunting and spending time with his family.

Surviving family members include his wife Nancy Holmes of Dalton; two daughters, Vicki L. Potter of Littleton, Kristi L. Fales of Franklin; two brothers, Billy Holmes of Gorham, Stanley Holmes of Dover; a sister, Lee Ann Brooks of Milan; and six grandchildren, Shawna and Krista Potter, McKenna and Ady Evans, and Dylan and Clayton Kipp. He was predeceased by a son Keith W. Allen in 2002.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Cushman Cemetery, Dalton, at the convenience of the family.
