Born Grace Pearl Rayburn in LaGrande, Oregon, on January 20, 1925, Grace was the seventh and last child of Orville and Mary Jane (Birdwell) Rayburn. Her five brothers and one sister have all predeceased her.

After graduation from high school in wartime 1943, Grace worked briefly as a station agent for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1944 she took a position as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army at Fort Richardson, Alaska, working as a cryptographer decoding Japanese military messages.

While in Alaska, she met Major Walter D. Hinkley, serving in the Army on the Aleutian Islands. They were married in his parents' home on Prospect Street in Lancaster on December 22, 1944 while Walter was home on leave. Grace returned to Oregon to live with her family until her husband was discharged from the Army in June 1946. They returned to Lancaster and purchased a home on Winter Street. Grace lived in that home until she took up residence at The Morrison in Whitefield for the last two years of her life.

Grace was the mother of two children: Andrew H. Hinkley, now of Charleston, Maine; and Deborah D. Tilton, now of North Attleborough, Massachusetts. At the time of her death she is survived by five grandchildren: Veronica Hinkley Reck of Alameda, California; Mariah Daley of Boerne, Texas; Benjamin Hinkley of St. Paul, Minnesota; Joseph Hinkley of Arlington, Virginia; and William Hinkley of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York; by a step-granddaughter, Jennifer Schultz of Vienna, Virginia; and by six great-grandchildren.

Grace's husband Walter, a well-known attorney and District Court judge in Lancaster, predeceased her in 1991.

Friends and family are invited to calling hours at the Bailey Funeral Home at 210 Main Street in Lancaster on Monday, January 16, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Summer Street cemetery in Lancaster in the spring.
