Graceanne Discenzo

DALTON - Graceanne Valentine Discenzo, 79 years of age, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. She is survived by her two children, Darren Discenzo and Danielle Heeran, her grandchildren, Ashlee, Gracie and Andi, as well as six of her siblings; Skip Valentine, Anita Allen, Steve Valentine, Jeanne Hansen, Michael Valentine and Lori Gesing. Graceanne was born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, October 7, 1942. She was one of eight children, the oldest daughter.
While the family was living in Kent, Ohio, Graceanne attended Kent State University. She met the love of her life, Donald. They were married on February 8, 1964 and honeymooned in the White Mountains. They fell in love with the area and moved to Whitefield. Graceanne held various jobs including telephone operator, legal secretary, and realtor until 1973, purchasing the hardware store in Whitefield, later adding Lancaster Hardware. Don and Grace were the Jack and Jill of all trades, and enjoyed traveling, riding motorcycles, collecting antiques, and loved their Irish Setters.
In 1975, they added to their family, adopting Darren. Ten years later, they adopted Danielle. Grace was an avid reader, always a book at hand and enjoyed bowling. But what she will be remembered for most was her willingness to help and support anyone and everyone. There was a deep level of charity, service and volunteerism, all done with compassion and integrity.
Graceanne affectionately referred to herself as her children’s chauffeur. She attended every one of Darren and Danielle’s events, and there were a lot; sporting events, dance lessons, music lessons, band and chorus concerts, musicals, Darren’s comedy shows, Ashlee’s dance recitals, musicals and plays, the list goes on. She was a constant source for support, advice, consolation, and strength.
In 2002, she became a Grandmother, and fully embraced her role. She loved caring for her granddaughter Ashlee, and continued to expand her love when Gracie and then Andi arrived. Once Don and Grace retired, they traveled often.
Grace lived a long life, filled with love, service, faith and compassion. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 24th at 12:30pm at St. Matthew’s Church in Whitefield.
