LUNENBURG - Gwendolyn Merrill of Lunenburg, 85, after a long battle with MS, passed away peacefully in her home Wednesday morning surrounded by her family. The daughter of Robert and Marjory (Sayers) Watts, born September 25, 1930, "Gwen" was a wife, mother and grandmother, and a breast cancer survivor. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1948 and married her husband George on August 19, 1951. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage together until his death in 2010. Over the course of her life, she worked in the Fairbanks payroll department, as an assistant cook at the Lunenburg School, and proudly served the town of Lunenburg as Town Treasurer for 19 years.
An example of quiet strength, her courage and perseverance allowed her to live independently and remain in her home until the end, in spite of her illness.
Gwen is survived by her sons, Dennis and his wife Betsy of Waterford, Steve and his wife Denene of Lyndonville, her daughter Cindy and her husband Roger of Plainfield, NH, and four grandchildren, Rachel, Stephanie, Kevin and John.
