Hilton E. "Buddy" Newell

WHITEFIELD - Hilton E. "Buddy" Newell, 88, of Newell Lane, passed peacefully with family by his side at Weeks Medical Center on March 24, 2022, after a recent illness.

Buddy was born in Whitefield on February 1, 1934, the son of Hilton A. Newell and Christobel Plante Newell. He was a graduate of Whitefield High School and served for a time in the US Army.

For a brief time, Buddy was a television and electronics repairman. For 30 years he worked for the US Post Office and was postmaster of Bethlehem his last 20 years. After retiring from the Post Office he worked 12 years in the Mt. Washington Hotel post office. In more recent years he was a courier for White Mountain Auto and enjoyed working with "the guys".

Generations of his family owned and operated the Newell Casino on Forest Lake. In his youth he was proud to work there and had many great experiences roller skating and dancing. He managed the casino in the last years hiring many musicians and rock bands, some of whom became notoriously famous.

Buddy was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening, tending his land, golfing, hunting, and hiking. After his retirement he was especially proud of completing the Appalachian Trail with his daughter Dianne and granddaughter Nikki. He wrote a book about their adventure titled "You won't get to Maine unless you walk in the rain". Buddy also enjoyed coaching little league baseball, even before his own kids were old enough to play.

Surviving family members include his wife Doris M. (Ball) Newell of Whitefield; his children, Scott Newell and wife Anita of Groveton, Linda Talotta of Hillsboro; 7 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by a daughter Dianne; a son Randy; and a brother Bruce Newell.
