GUILDHALL, VT - James M. Homer, 71, died of a sudden illness at his home Monday evening, January 22, 2024.
Jim was born in Natick, Massachusetts on October 7, 1952, the son of Aloyius and Janie (Brown) Homer. He worked most of his life in the building construction trade and was a general contractor for both residential and commercial construction. During the Vietnam War era he served in the US Army and later the Army reserves.
Jim had a love of the outdoors; from hunting in the hills and forests of the NEK, to meandering up a river with his fishing pole, to walks around the property with his long-term partner, Mary Estabrooks, he was always happiest out in nature.
Through his lifetime of hunting and fishing he developed a vast knowledge of the woods and an intense respect and appreciation for the animals and ecosystems around him. Jim loved imparting this knowledge on others and sharing his experience, instilling this passion in the next generation. This is just one of the ways Jim showed his love for those around him. He always put others first and was an incredibly thoughtful caregiver and partner. He had a selfless attitude and never hesitated to step up and help others in times of need. An intense lover of animals, Jim also cared deeply for all his pets over the years, especially his yellow lab, Gus.
Jim lived a full life and enjoyed it to the max. He will be missed by all those who loved him.
He is survived by his life partner of 15 years Mary Estabrooks; two children, Lauren Homer and Kevin Homer; Mary’s children, Ian Estabrooks (Alicja), Matthew Estabrooks (Jessica), and Dylan Estabrooks (Maggie); 7 grandchildren; siblings Allison Knight and Charles Homer; and many nieces and nephews.
A private memorial will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jim’s name to Vermont Fish and Wildlife to protect and preserve wildlife, plants, and their habitats.
