Janet Martin, 82, of Somersworth, died peacefully June 26, 2024 at Langdon Place, Dover, NH, from cancer. The daughter of Millard and Louise Martin, she was born July 13, 1941 in Lancaster, NH where she grew up on her parents’ dairy farm. In 1952, she barely escaped injury when the farmhouse kitchen caught fire. Interviewed by a Coos County Democrat reporter, Janet bemoaned the fact the dishes she’d washed earlier were now ruined. Janet played basketball at Lancaster High School and graduated with honors in 1959. She attended UNH and later a cytology program in Boston, which launched her career in this field. Over a span of more than 40 years, she worked at Weeks Memorial Hospital, Littleton Hospital and later Path Labs in Portsmouth, NH.
Janet enjoyed travel, (including sister trips), reading, watching Jeopardy, and cats, especially black ones. She shared her son John’s love of sports, watching Red Sox and Celtic’s games. Most of all she loved her family and the farm where she grew up in the White Mountains.
Janet is survived by her son John "Oaky" Ouellette and wife Kerry of Epping; grandchildren Benjamin Ouellette of Washington D.C. and Gabrielle Ouellette of Bangor, ME; three sisters: Virginia Martin (Ken Barnes) of Contoocook, Susan Wallace (Rob Johnston) of Exeter, RI and Patricia Martin (Rick Moog) of Downingtown PA; sisters-in-laws Muriel Martin of Guildhall, Sylvia Martin of Manchester, Diane Martin of Lancaster and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Millard and Louise; her four brothers John Martin, Richard “Stretch” Martin, Millard F. Martin Jr. “Sonny” and Glenn Martin and brother-in-law David Wallace.
Calling hours will be Friday July 5th from 5-6:30 at the Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster. Donations in Janet’s memory may be made to the Pope Memorial Humane Society - Cocheco Valley in Dover, NH or the American Cancer Society.
