Jerry S. Chelle Sr.
April 15, 1939 — August 30, 2017
LANCASTER - Jerry S. Chelle Sr., 78, of Portland Street, died Wednesday, August 30th, 2017, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, after a long illness.
Mr. Chelle was born in Gary, Indiana, on April 15, 1939, the son of Steve and Helen (Fesko) Chelle. He was raised in Indiana where he graduated high school and then began a long career with the military.
Jerry first served with the U. S. Navy Submarine Service and was a Vietnam Veteran. After his military career he served with the Merchant Marines until retiring in 2005. In 1986 he then moved with his family to the North Road, Lancaster, to a farmhouse his wife Judie had purchased, sight unseen.
Jerry always loved the water and particularly enjoyed fishing. He was an active member of the John W. Weeks Post 3041 VFW in Lancaster and served as chaplain.
Helen Judie (Lewis) Chelle predeceased him in 1992. He later married Samantha McGrath who also predeceased him in 2005. He was also predeceased by his brother Thomas Chelle.
Surviving family members include four children, Dawn E. DeMaro of Waterloo, Iowa, Tammi K. Wear of Gatlinburg, TN, Wendy J. Foote and husband Jon of Waterloo, Iowa; Jerry S. Chelle Jr. and husband Jonathan Hodge of Lynn, MA; a sister Judy Lynne and her partner Peter of North Rothbury, Australia; 1 Niece; 2 Nephews; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his longtime friend and caretaker Jeff Hale.
At Jerry Sr.'s request there are no services. A burial at sea will be held at a later date.
