John J. Smith

John J. Smith, 94, passed away on Thursday January 26, 2012 in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on August 27, 1917 the eldest son of the late John and Mary (White) Smith. Mr. Smith graduated from Lancaster Academy in 1934, receiving a scholarship for debating to Bates College. He was a member of championship debate teams for both high school and college.

Mr. Smith was drafted in the Army in 1942 where he became a classification specialist obtaining the rank of sergeant before his discharge in 1946. He married Ann Elizabeth Woodward in 1947. Mr. Smith worked for Grolier Publishing Company from1938 until his retirement in1984; holding various editorial positions becoming executive editor of Encyclopedia Americana in 1964. After his retirement Mr. Smith became a professional photographer in New York having his work published in numerous books and magazines. On Mr. Smith's 94th birthday he finally had his book that he wrote and illustrated "Wildflowers of New England" published. Later in his retirement he returned to Lancaster to live at the family farm and presented slide shows of nature and travel at the local library. Mr. Smith was a member of the Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, Audubon Society and a Smithsonian Institution National Associate.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Ann Smith in 1996, his three brothers George M. Smith, Arthur P. Smith and Paul A. Smith. He is survived by nieces Elizabeth Barber, Connie Smith a nephew Matt Smith, a great nephew Andy Smith, a god daughter Nancy Woodward, his loving caregiver Cheryl MacKillop, along with many other nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Wednesday February 1, 2012 at Bailey Funeral Home in Lancaster from 2-4 and 6-8. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 11 Am at All Saints Catholic Church in Lancaster. Burial will be held in the spring in Calvary Cemetery.
