WHITEFIELD – Judith I. Murray, 97, formerly of Montpelier, VT, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 14, 2024, at The Morrison, Whitefield, after a recent period of failing health.
Judith was born in Worcester, MA, on March 12, 1927, the daughter of Milton H. and Nellie (Wheeler) Crooker. She was educated in public schools in Worcester, Westbrook College in Portland, Maine, and Mary Hitchcock Hospital School of Medical Technology in Hanover, NH. While residing with her family in Delmar, NY, she was a medical technologist for many years at Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY.
In 1951 she married Robert K. Illingworth in Worcester, MA. They lived in New Jersey, Maryland, Texas, and New Mexico while he was in the US Army during the Korean War. He passed away in 1980 in Montpelier. Their children are Linda I Wooster of East Burke, VT and wife of H. Keith Wooster, and Robert M. Illingworth of Castle Hayne, NC, and his wife Christine. She is also survived by a grandson Brett Illingworth of California; 5 great-grandchildren; and 2 nieces. She was predeceased by a brother Richard F. Crooker as well as her parents and sister-in-law. In 1996 Judith married James F. Murray of Barre, VT. He predeceased her in 2012.
Judith was employed by the Legislative Council, State of Vermont, during the legislative sessions in the 80’s and 90’s. She was a Hospice volunteer and a Red Cross volunteer. She attended Bethany United Church in Montpelier and was a member of the Brown Bag Reading Group. She was a member of the Granite Center Garden Club in Barre. She also volunteered in the Central Vermont Medical Center gift shop for several years.
Traveling, reading, golf, gardening, bridge, knitting, and rug hooking were some of her interests. In earlier years, Judy was an active member of the Green Mountain Club and enjoyed cross country skiing. Travels with her daughter in the US and Europe were special memories to her.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 26th at 1:00PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, 210 Main Street, Lancaster, NH. Life Cycle celebrant Deborah Szauter of Twin Mountain, NH, will officiate.
