Judith Colby Young, 91 of Lunenburg, Vermont passed away at the Genesis Nursing Home in Lancaster, NH on February 7, 2025. She was born in Victory, VT, the daughter of Howard and Iola Hodgdon Colby on July 12, 1933. She was a graduate of Lancaster Academy and married Howard R. Young in 1952. Howard and Judy met at the Lancaster Fair where she was about to go on stage to model a 4-H dress she had made.
They had two daughters, Beth and Susan, who are both deceased.
Judy was an active community member. She operated the village store for many years. Later she worked in the office at Gilman Paper Mill and at The Stinehour Press. She helped organize the Fourth of July celebrations in Lunenburg for many years. She was on many town committees, a 4-H leader, a member of the historical society, a cemetery commissioner, and worked at the Lancaster Fair exhibition hall. She made a wreath for Memorial Day each year for the monument. She was a reporter for the Coos County Democrat which she enjoyed. Judy and Howard were active supporters of the Weathervane Theater, where their daughter Beth performed. They hosted an annual gathering for staff and actors at their home.
A true Vermonter who made her own maple syrup every year. Her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews coveted her popcorn balls she made for them every Halloween.
Her husband was a U.S. Marine who served on the U.S.S. Montpelier, and they attended reunions nearly every year. She and Howard also enjoyed at least forty-three hunting and fishing trips to Forestville, Quebec, often taking family members. She was an avid gardener until the last couple of years.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Meghan Connolly of Colorado. She is also survived by two brothers, Weston (Frances) and Amos (Mary Jane) and their spouses, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Christmas was always her favorite time of the year and she got to spend this past Christmas with her granddaughter who came to visit her from Colorado.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lunenburg United Methodist Church, 20 Bobbin Mill Road at 1pm on Sunday, May 4th. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial Contributions can be made to NEK Methodist Church, C/O Rose Poland, 822 Pond Hill Road, Lunenburg.
