LANCASTER, NH- Leonard Moses Savage born on May 16, 1916, died at the Copley Manor in Morrisville, VT on September 10, 2010.
Parents of Leonard were William and Angie (Moses) Savage; siblings were George and Bernard Savage and Kathryn Hinkley all deceased.
Leonard lived almost all of his life on Stebbins Hill at the Savage Farm, moving there from the Baker Farm at the age of 3.
His education was at Lancaster Schools graduating from Lancaster Academy in 1934. He enlisted in the US Army when World War II broke out and saw duty in Italy and France as a Sergeant. Leonard married Virginia Morse on February 21, 1946 on his return from active duty. Virginia died November 18, 2009.
In 1959 Leonard sold his farm and dairy cows on the upper portion of Stebbins Hill and went to work for Curran and Lavoie Construction Co. When the company was bought out by Cianbro he continued to work for them until retiring in his 70's.
His hobbies included raising Hereford's and selling organic beef (before it was popular). Declining health forced the sale of the herd. His pride and joy was his Belgians team of Annie and Dolly, followed by Sarah and Cokie. He also refurbished 2 sleighs, his 1949 Packard, his 1952 John Deere tractor, an antique radio and repaired the cannon in Soldiers Park, Lancaster.
He loved his farm and often could be seen standing in the road looking over the mountains and town he so loved.
He is survived by his children, Mary Jo Savage Berube and her partner Philip Bovia of Underhill, VT, Alan Savage and his wife Joanne (Forbes) of Lancaster; grandsons John W. Berube Jr. and his family of Deerfield, NH and Jason Berube and partner Tamara Kelley of St. Albans, VT.
A visiting hour will be held Sunday September 12, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster, and a graveside service will follow immediately after in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster.
Donations maybe made in his memory to the Lancaster Fair Assoc. PO Box 516, or the Lancaster Historical Society, PO Box 473, Lancaster, NH 03584
