Leslie W. "Gob" Streeter

LUNENBURG - Leslie W. "Gob" Streeter, 82, died suddenly at his home, Wednesday morning November 29, 2006.

Leslie was born in East Concord, VT, on July 16, 1924, the son of Harry P. and Lilla A. (Smith) Streeter.

Raised in East Concord he attended local schools and was a graduate of Concord High School. He went on to serve with the US Navy in World War II and was stationed aboard the USS Robert E. Keller. He served in throughout the Pacific Theatre including the battle of Iwo Jima. By the time of his discharge he received the WWII Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal with four stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star, and the American Area Medal.

Returning home he married Marian Brown of Lunenburg on March 13, 1946. He then attended the University of Vermont and the Lyndon Teachers College. For forty years he owned and operated the Lunenburg Oil Company while also running a lumber mill and farm. He later went into the construction business with his son Alan.

He served the Lunenburg community as water commissioner for over 50 years and was a former town selectman.

He was a proud member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, the Iwo Jima Survivors, the American Legion, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, and the St. Johnsbury Elks. Leslie also enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and was a very avid Red Sox fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grand and great-grandchildren.

Family members include his wife Marian of Lunenburg; two sons, Glenn C. Streeter and Leslie Alan Streeter, both of Lunenburg; a brother Prescott Streeter of Merrimack, NH; a step-sister Marion Spriggs of Merrimack, NH; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Marjorie Jean Streeter in 1993.

Memorial visiting hours will be held Friday evening December 1, from 6-8 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM at the Lunenburg Methodist Church. Rev. John Somers of St. Johnsbury will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in the Riverside Cemetery,
