Lindsey A. Briggs

May 4, 1938 — August 5, 2015

LITTLETON - Lindsey Arnold Briggs, passed away August 5th, 2015 at home in his sleep. Born at home in 1938, he was son of Phyllis and Leslie Briggs of East Concord VT.

Lindsey graduated from Concord High School in 1956 and then went on scholarship to study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge MA. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1960 from MIT, and then made a big move to California to work for Aerojet Corporation, where he worked for over 39 yrs.  During his time as an engineer (fondly referred to as a "rocket scientist" by his family), he led program management of the Minutemen ICBM during the US efforts to catch up with Russia at the height of the Cold War.

A four year high school baseball and basketball player, one of his fondest memories was of making it to the VT State Championship basketball game in Barre. Lindsey was always an avid supporter of youth athletics, coaching all of his children's teams through the years and rarely missed a high school sporting event his children played in. He was ahead of his time as a perfectionist statistician and record keeper, using what we now call "metrics" to plan the winning lineup. He played and coached in adult softball and basketball leagues throughout his life. Even into his 70's, while his health allowed him, he went to the community softball games held nightly in the summers.

While living in California he took up cycling, and logged thousands of hours riding the bike trails that follow the American River in and around Sacramento. His daily routine of 25 miles thru any kind of weather was an impressive feat for years. He took up backpacking in the Sierra's and introduced his family to "G.O.R.P" as a trailside staple.  In winter, he would bring his family to the Sierra Mountains for a look at the snow and a day of tobogganing- on his original wooden toboggan hauled from Vermont.

He was a committed volunteer at the Sacramento County Sheriff's Dept. In 1976 he completed a course in reserve officer training, graduating highest in his class.  For 20 years with the sheriff's reserve he worked a weekly patrol riding with a seasoned officer.

He served his alma mater MIT for many years as a regional coordinator and an educational counselor and interviewed countless teens applying for admission. In 2006 he received

the "George B. Morgan '20 Award" recognizing dedication to the MIT admissions process.

He enjoyed continuing education courses offered for alums and the MIT Technology Review magazine was a staple of his reading stack.

In his retirement he returned to New England, living in his hometown village of East Concord, VT and most recently in Littleton, NH.

Predeceased by his parents Leslie Charles Briggs and Phyllis Esther (Woodbury) Briggs, he is survived by his brother Gary Briggs (Linda) of Morrisville, VT, sister Janice Boulais of  Plaistow, NH, formerly married to Noreen with whom he had daughter Stephanie Briggs (Michael Lyons) of Norwich VT, son Glenn Lansing Briggs  (Kendice) of Irvine, CA, daughter Sheila Briggs Scafine (Mark) of San Mateo CA.  And lovingly remembered by seven grandchildren Hannah, Gus, and Maddie Lyons, Austyn and Carsen Briggs, Marco and Isabella Scafine.

Memorial services will be held at Bailey Funeral Home Sunday August 9th at 2:00pm.
