April 3, 1936 — February 1, 2024

LANCASTER – Lionel E. Guay, 87, died Thursday morning, February 1, 2024, at Country Village Healthcare Center, after a period of failing health.

Born in Berlin, NH, on April 3, 1936, Lionel was the son of Alyre and Beatrice (Chatigny) Guay. He was raised in Berlin and was a graduate of Notre Dame High School. Lionel loved hockey and spent his youth at his beloved Notre Dame Arena. He met Elaine Macy of Long Island, NY, and they later married. Lionel and Elaine resided for a time in Gorham and later moved to Lancaster.

Lionel was a longtime insurance adjuster and appraiser for Concord Group Insurance. He was an active Rotarian and past president of the Lancaster Rotary. In his younger years, he served in the National Guard. A love of horses was thrust upon him by his horse-crazy daughters. Later in life, Lionel and Elaine enjoyed raising miniature horses at their Grange Road home. Going for long car rides was always a favorite pastime. He, his daughter, Linda, and his granddaughter, Bri, traveled many miles on adventures from Maine to Florida. A lifelong Montreal Canadiens hockey fan, one of his favorite memories was traveling to Boston with his son, Danny, to watch the Canadiens play their nemesis, the Boston Bruins.

Surviving family members include his children Danny Guay (Lisa) of Groveton, Judy Matthews (George) of Lancaster, Linda Boucher of Derry, NH, Jennifer LaPointe (Daniel) of Knox, Maine, daughter-in-law, Monika Guay (Jerry) of Groveton, his grandchildren Belinda, Patrick, Joshua, Christian, Matthew, Nathan, Brianna, Samantha, Korey, Megan and numerous great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by Elaine, his sons, David and Jerry, and his furry companions, Simba and Dolly.

A private memorial service will be held in the spring.
