JEFFERSON - Lorraine T. Marshall, 84, died quietly on Sunday, August 8, 2009, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster following a long illness.
Mrs. Marshall was born in Gilman, VT, on July 12, 1925, the daughter of Miles Sr. and Annie (Rooney) Quigley.
Lorraine was a graduate of Littleton High School and following graduation she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Cadet Corps and trained to become a registered nurse to serve in the war effort during World War II. She studied at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester as well as the Concord Psychiatric Hospital.
Six months before completing her RN certification she left to marry her fiancé, Douglas Marshall of Lancaster, who had completed his tour of duty in the Marine Corps and was moving to Massachusetts to attend Boston University on the G.I. Bill.
Throughout their 58-year marriage Doug and Lorraine were often relocated by his employer, Joseph E. Seagram & Son, and raised their family of five children in Massachusetts, Maryland, Kentucky, Indiana and New York.
Once her children were grown Lorraine returned to school and received her degree from Rockland Community College in New York and went on to work at Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York as a registered nurse. She also worked at a private nursing home in Nanuet, New York before returning with her husband to Lancaster, NH, where they retired together in 1984.
Mrs. Marshall was a communicant of All Saints Catholic Church in Lancaster. She was a long-time vocalist in the church choir and a member of the Tabernacle Society until the early onset of her illness.
A life-long lover of music, dance and sports, Lorraine performed live on stage, dancing with stars such as Cameron Mitchell. She and her daughter performed in concert with the Shaw Brothers and entertained at the Lancaster Alumni Association reunions on several occasions.
She was a die-hard Red Sox and Patriots fan cherishing an autographed photo of Ted Williams that he signed in honor of her newborn son in 1947. Her other cherished sports item was a photo signed by the late John Unitas, star quarterback for the Baltimore Colts.
Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Kathi Marshall of Jefferson, four sons-Gary Marshall of Williamsburg, VA, Richard Marshall of Wappinger Falls, NY, Jeff Marshall of Warwick, NY and Tim Marshall of Newark, DE, as well as twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Doug, in 2003, and all her siblings-Miles Quigley, Jr., Colleen McBride and Betty Quigley.
