Margaret W. Keith

June 10, 1920 — January 3, 2008

Lancaster - Margaret Willing Ridgely Keith, 87, died on Thursday morning, January 3, 2008, at the Country Village Health Care Center in Lancaster.

Margie was born on June 10, 1920 in Baltimore, MD to Marguerite Hunt and Julian Ridgely. She attended the Calvert and Bryn Mawr Schools and Sweet Briar College. She came to New England in her twenties when she took a job as secretary to the dean of students at Middlebury College. It was in Vermont that she met Freeman Keith, whom she married in 1950. They lived in the Montpelier area for several years before moving to Lunenburg when Freeman began work at The Stinehour Press. In 1963 the family moved to Lancaster.

Margie deeply experienced both the challenges and the blessings of this life. Musically gifted, she learned to play the piano at an early age. She and Freeman shared a life-long love of classical music, and she served as organist at many North Country church services. She welcomed neighborhood children into her home, where they had free access to the piano, the bookshelves and the toy drawer. Margie was also a lover of nature who relished long walks, found (and shared) hidden berry patches and swimming holes, made beautiful floral note cards, and appreciated the beauty of the everyday. Her creativity, generosity and capacity for love were great.

She leaves her son Christopher (and daughter-in-law Oona Johnson) of San Leandro, CA, her daughter Cynthia (and son-in-law Brown Dobyns) of Norwich, VT and Lancaster, NH, and two grand-children, James and Susannah, of San Leandro, CA. She was predeceased by her husband Freeman Keith, son Cameron "Kim" Keith, sister Julia Howe, and brothers Edward and Julian.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 9 at 1:00 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lancaster, with the Rev. David Rose officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lancaster, or Weeks Memorial Library, Lancaster.
