Marguerite S. Brainard

December 29, 1925 — June 30, 2016

LANCASTER - Marguerite S. Brainard died on June 30, 2016 at St Vincent DePaul Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Berlin surrounded by her family at the age of 90.



She was born in Jefferson, NH on December 29, 1925 to Fred and Gladys (Ingerson) Samson.



Her early years were spent in Jefferson living next to the Waumbek Golf Course.  She told many stories about watching the deer play on the 5



th



green.   Her love for wildlife continued throughout her life and she would often ask if we had seen any critters lately.



She left school after the 9



th



grade to work at the Chair Factory in Whitefield and later as a Telephone Operator in Jefferson and Twin Mountain.  She married George Griffin in 1945 and moved to Lancaster.  After George's death in 1968 she married Walter Brainard.



Once her girls were in school she returned to work as a Waitress and Short Order Cook at Hicks Restaurant, Lancaster Diner and the Bowling Alley in Lancaster from which she retired in 1993.



Marguerite was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #3041 for 65 years.  In the early days prior to the post home being built the Ladies held their meeting at member's homes.  She enjoyed a good game of cribbage and competed in many tournaments at the club.  Among other things she worked on Toys for Tots drives and the State Convention in 1964.  Her favorite pastime was watching her great grandchildren participate in sports as well as vacationing with family.



Surviving family members include her two daughters, Sally Matthews of Jefferson, NH and Jean Griffin Thebodeau of Hudson. NH;  five granddaughters, Karen Gagne and her husband Rich of Berlin, NH, Kelly Stone and her husband Stephen of Bethel, Maine, Kim Matthews and her husband Chris Leavitt of Lancaster, NH, Tammy Ebert and her husband Geoff of Milford, NH Tina Bonhomme and her husband Daniel of Hudson, NH; fourteen great grandchildren, Amanda & Chris Dubay, Gabrielle & Zachary Stone,  Rian Matthews, Benjamin & Mary King, Joshua Aldrich, Darren & Kristin Antone, Matthew & Melissa Ebert, Kraig & Felicia Hoag;  four great, great granddaughters, Paige Bouchard, Courtney Aldrich, Trinity & Mercedez Briand.  A brother-in-law Douglas Beaton and a sister-in-law Louise Samson both of Lancaster as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.



Besides her parents and husbands she was pre-deceased by two brothers Richard and Lawrence Samson, a sister Jane Beaton and a sister-in-law Dorothy Samson all of Lancaster.



At Marguerite's request there will be no calling hours.  A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery on Saturday July 23
